In the next couple of days Boobie Blog will add an age verification for certain locations.
I do not agree with this policy.
The reason for adding it is because UK regulator Ofcom have sent warnings of steep fines if I do not comply, and I am in no position to risk that. It would be the end of Boobie Blog.
It may still be the end due to drops in traffic and revenue. Only time will tell.
For those of you who will encounter this age verification, here are two things you should know:
- It is free
- I do not see any of the information you submit or will have access to it.
A someone who has ran adult sites for a long time, I do not want underage people visiting this site and I am not against underaged people being prevented to visit.
I do disagree HEAVILY that adults should be forced to hand over personal information to visit adult sites.
I believe parents should parent and there are already plenty of ways to prevent underaged people from visiting adult sites if parents wish to do so.
Forcing website owners to add age verification is an ineffective tool due to not all adult sites will comply and there will always be workarounds. It will only accomplish two things.
- Hurting and driving adult sites out of business
- Ending privacy on the internet

UK laws do not apply around the world, they apply in the UK. Much like any countries laws only apply in their own country.
If Sudan, China, Mozambique, Brazil threatened you with fines would you pay attention to them? I suspect not.
Unless you are based in the UK and hosted in the UK (I believe you are Canadian based?), they cannot fine you, tell them to fuck off.
I don’t know all the details, but my understanding is that if your website is accessible to another country, and you are therefore conducting business and earning revenue from that country, the laws of that country can be applied to you.
Now, I would also assume that the amount of traffic a site sees would affect how interested any government is. But I’d be pretty hesitant to gamble my livelihood on that.

Its not that simple. Without getting into details, they are also threatening other actions like blocking my servers to the UK etc.
And, its not a UK only issue. Age verification requirements are being enacted in many US states, France and I know its in the works for many other EU countries and Canada which yes, is where I am located. Its coming everywhere sooner or later.
As someone who lost their website due to interfering busybodies, I know how scary it can be to have someone come after you like this. Even if UK laws don’t apply to you or your host, they can still take you to court, and fighting a legal battle could be just as costly – or more so – than the fines they are threatening.
Maybe look into either presenting the age verification to only UK IP addresses or blocking UK IP addresses altogether?

Yes, this is a major point. Legal battles absolutely suck and are very stressful. Especially against a government with endless resources.
And yes, age verification will be only be added to locations that require it so if you’re surfing from Canada or Denmark, nothing will change.
I think most people will understand. You have to do what you have to do. Too difficult to fight, from this side, people who want to control everything you think, say and do. Heck some people actually agree with this sort of thing. Imagine other people are making money off telling people what to think, say and do.

Why do idiotic people think they should police other people’s kids? It’s the PARENTS’ job to watch over their kid and make sure they’re not getting into any website they shouldn’t.
